A simple spice that can induce weight loss?

Cinnamon weight loss

It might be surprising to learn how many different spices could have an effect on weight loss.

We’ve already covered a couple, like cayenne pepper and turmeric (due to its curcumin content).

And now we are here to cover a third, and a delicious one at that.

Cinnamon.

Cinnamon and weight loss

A meta-analysis conducted by researchers out of Iran and the UK, published in Journal of Food Biochemistry in 2022, found that cinnamon supplementation resulted in a significant decrease in both body weight and BMI. [1]

The researchers found that the impact was greater in doses above 3g/day.

Which, to be fair, is a lot of cinnamon.

It should also be noted that the research was conducted on patients with PCOS, so we should ask whether these results can be extrapolated to other parts of the general population.

Now, with all of that said, this is still a very promising development.

Why might cinnamon help us lose weight?

While more research needs to be done to determine just exactly how cinnamon consumption might be associated with weight loss, we can make some educated speculations.

To start, cinnamon is high in flavonoids, which we have also found scientific evidence to show could aid in weight loss efforts.

And while that might be a factor, there is certainly a more significant one.

Cinnamon is known to have blood sugar-lowering effects.

Blood sugar lowering effects result in a lower insulin response.

With insulin being known to many as the “fat-storing hormone”, it could possibly be a mechanism, or a primary mechanism, by which cinnamon could be associated with weight loss.

Which brings us to the final point in this present discussion.

Be safe with cinnamon

We need to be careful with cinnamon, especially if you are diabetic, prediabetic, have blood sugar issues, or are taking blood sugar lowering medication.

If you are taking blood sugar lowering medication as well as cinnamon, there is a possibility that your blood sugar levels could plunge dangerously low.

So, as with all things, talk to your licensed healthcare practitioner before making any changes or additions to your diet, wellness, or health care routines and make sure what you are doing is safe and appropriate for you.
