You may be familiar with carotenoids, such as beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A) that give some plants their orange-ish colors, and their positive effects on eye health and vision.
But people rarely speak of them in terms of their effects on body weight.
Should they, though?
The surprising science of carotenoids and weight loss
A very interesting meta-analysis published in 2021 found that carotenoid supplementation was significantly associated with reductions in body weight, BMI, and waist circumference.
Perhaps even more surprising, the researchers found that carotenoid insufficiency was a risk factor for overweight and obesity. [1]
Wow.
Who would have thought that the so-called “eyesight vitamin” would also be implicated in both weight loss and weight gain.
Should we really be surprised, though?
Why we should expect carotenoids to affect body weight
As we have seen throughout this exploration of all the different foods, nutrients, and eating styles and their effects on body weight, there certainly is a common thread.
And it may not suit those looking for a single quick fix, but that does not negate its truth.
That common thread is overall health.
From things like walking, probiotics, spirulina, citrus fruits, and more, many foods and nutrients that have established health-boosting properties also seem to be associated with a healthier weight.
Or, put more simply, good health equal good weight.
Go figure!
The true weight loss formula that does not require advanced degrees or lots of money
While so much focus over the years of the existence of the weight loss industry has been on calorie restriction and exercise (eat less, move more) perhaps our eyes have been off the ball.
Perhaps the real key is to focus first on our overall health. And to do so by consuming nutritious and healing foods while nourishing and healing our bodies, microbiomes, and even out minds, then allowing a healthy body weight to come naturally.
So, while you are ensuring to get enough carotenoids like vitamin A into your diets and supporting your vision, just know that the support you are giving your body may just cause it to become a little lighter as well.
